AI4Dev (Artificial Intelligence for Development) is a collaborative initiative of ZMQ GLOBAL (Montreal, CANADA), ZMQ DEVELOPMENT (New Delhi, INDIA) and Qaff Africa Foundation (Kampala, UGANDA). The initiative is designed to build AI Models on issues of Development for building solutions on Health & SBCC, Education & Literacy, Agriculture & rural livelihood, Climate Change & Biodiversity, Sustainable Cities & Settlements and; Migration for sustainable development. The initiative is in alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals.

AI4D MODEL
The emergence of ‘Digital Twins‘ – Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoTs), provides a new opportunity to build robust and auto-improving development solutions. ZMQ’s last-mile AI solutions are based on the principles of Data Justice with community centric approach. AI models are built with the community consent, inputs and participation thus giving them the ownership of solutions. AI models are data agnostic but the existing data at grassroot and in unreached communities is poor and of fractured. As a first step it is important to generate reliable local data for the models. It is therefore important to plan and design data collection processes on the ground with consent of the communities. The data ownership should also must rest with the communities based on principles of data justice and equity. Once the Data Management & Analysis is accomplished the AI Models are developed for communities need. ZMQ provides technical expertise in building AI models and integrating them in existing existing T4D solutions. Ownership of both data and solutions rests with the communities. ZMQ also assists in validating the models and their efficiencies through Research for Development process. This approach of Data Collection (IOT4D), AI for Development Models (AI4D) and validation through research, Research for Development (R4D) is also referred as Triple Impact Model.

AI4D in ZMQ T4D MoDEL
ZMQ has been a pioneer in T4D (Technology for Development) with over 25 years of experience of designing, developing, and implementing technology linked Development Models for underserved & unreached communities in low-resource settings of Asia and Africa. We have worked in the areas of health & nutrition, literacy & education, capacity building & livelihood, agriculture & food security, environment & biodiversity, climate change & its impact on health, conflicts & migration and other issues of sustainable development. Over the years ZMQ developed a Last-mile Digital Transformation Model with a System Change Approach (figure below). T4D model is based on a progressive innovation approach which fosters iterative improvements in its T4D solutions for accessibility, acceptability & adoption. Despite being designed for low-resource settings, the model is technology friendly and keeps pace with emerging technologies. ZMQ integrates AI4D outcomes in their T4D solutions. Once the AI4D models have achieved stability, ZMQ engages withe communities in building solutions based on predictive outcomes by integrating the models in their T4D solutions
